How to handle Le Pen: Mainstream parties at odds over French election results

Marine Le Pen’s National Front has finished second in the first round of France’s local elections. It’s the party’s best score ever, with more than a quarter of the vote, ahead of the ruling Socialists; but Le Pen failed to beat out the mainstream conservatives of Nicolas Sarkozy. Has Sarkozy’s return to politics stolen some of her thunder? Or has Prime Minister Manuel Valls, with his personal involvement, limited the damage for the Socialists? Have Valls and Sarkozy figured out Le Pen?
